TOKYO – Japanese tv, news and practically everyone in the office was freaking out as per usual today over news that a “mysterious hand” seen in a photograph of soccer players Keisuke Honda and Makoto Hasabe had caused the Japanese team to lose their shot at winning the World Cup.

click here to see the Japanese photo of the hand

The country has been obsessed with soccer, peaking on Tuesday, as over 60% of the population stayed up until 3am watching the last game with the Japanese team.

The photo, posted on a Danish web site shows Honda with his arms around teammate before this Tuesday’s fatal game in which Japan lost to Paraguay due to a misfired penalty kick.

In addition to ‘s two hands, a mysterious third hand is visible inserted between Keisuke Honda and Makoto Hasabe.

All day long media here blamed the loss on the “mysterious hand”.

No strangers to superstition, Japanese consume mass doses of mysterious happening tv shows which dramatize supposedly true ghost photos and other creepy offerings.

Street fortune tellers specializing mostly in palm reading are everywhere.

Needless to say, by nightfall, some bright bulb had figured out the picture had merely been cropped to exclude a man with an extremely long left arm: defender Yuto Nagatomo.
